All About Welding Equipment

Post by: iGAM Created Date: Fri, May 17, 2024 0 Comments

Love it or hate it, welding is a necessity for any manufacturer looking to improve production capacity.

Humans have been using welding techniques for thousands of years to create houseware, weapons, and other goods.

Nowadays, welding is used for all sorts of purposes, such as manufacturing cars, connecting underwater pipes, building skyscrapers, and more.

Manufacturers of every size and industry can use welding equipment to improve their production processes. Learn more about welding and how to purchase welding equipment for your facility below.

What is welding?

Welding is the process of melting two metals (or less commonly other materials, such as wood) to form a joint.

Welding has been around for a long time. Welding tools and depictions of welders were discovered in an ancient Egyptian tomb dating around 4000 B.C.E.

It’s clear that, with such a long history and the prevalence of welding today, welding is one of the foundations of manufacturing.

Types of welding

There are several types of welding processes. One popular method in manufacturing is spot welding.

With spot welding, two pieces of metal are permanently attached at circular points (hence, “spot” welding).

A machine like a pedestal spot welder achieves this with a pedestal that is pressed on by an operator, causing two copper alloy electrodes to press on two pieces of metal.

An electrical current passes through the copper alloy electrodes, which are situated above and below the metal pieces as shown by the diagram. The electrodes heat at the point of the copper and the metal pieces.

Once the metal is welded together, the current stops, but the electrodes apply pressure to ensure the metal is solidified into a joint.

This process is repeated until the metal pieces are fully welded into a joint.

Other welding processes include:

  • MIG welding
  • Stick welding
  • TIG welding
  • Plasma Arc welding
  • Electron beam welding
  • Laser beam welding
  • Gas welding
  • Flux cord arc welding
  • Atomic hydrogen welding
  • Electroslag welding

Automatic versus manual welding

There are three types of welders:

  • Humans
  • Human-operated machines
  • Automatic machines

Human welders have been transforming the art and technology of welding since its creation.

To make welding easier and more efficient, welding machines like the pedestal spot welder mentioned above were invented. Then, as technology developed, fully automatic robotic welders entered the market.

Now, manufacturers around the world in any industry can use welding for their metal products. Industries that commonly use welding machinery include automotive, construction, and aerospace and defense.
